From the Official Book (NTT PUB.1991)

A leader of the "Ryuukishidan (Dragon Knights)." Since his father was also the captain, it is the two generation captain of father and son. And it is the first case in long history.
Cain has lost parents when he was young. Especially his father had been playing an active part as a leader in those days, so even a rumor that he was assassinated was spread. Althogh the members of the "Dragon Knights" also were shaken, only father's dragon trusted him and continued waiting for. The members impressed by such dragon hardens union, though, the dragon became weak.
Among the members watching, Cain saved the weakening dragon. Cain was appointed to the leader by his talent to open the dragon's heart.

In the Story

Cain was bearing vague distrust against his lord. Therefore, he couldn't help protecting Cecil when he refuted the royal order and became exiled. Cain also was exiledthe Kingdom Baron.
However, Cain has a shady thought to Cecil, the best friend. The feeling which had to be hidden because of his pride as a knight and the friendship to Cecil was his weak point, and if it was amplified it could be murderous intention. The "jealousy" to the person who got the thing which he couldn't gain, is the feeling.

He kept self, only murderous intention was amplified, and he turned a sword to Cecil. But who was most troubled with that was he himself released from the spell which amplify murderous intention . The only expiation is to return a blow against the ringleader; he proceeds to the final battle with Cecil and others.

Personal Opinion

Cos he's the "Hangyaku Jump Kamen (Betray Jump Mask :P)," I thoght he had black or deep dark brown hair surely. So I laughed heartily as I watched his blond hair in the ending. But I think Cain embodies both of two things: even the strongest human can fall apart when a little open seam was poked, and even the weakest human can rise from the weakness.
Therefore, surely, when he come down the Mt. Ordeals, he'll be a really smart man. His pride has forced him to hide his real intentions, though, the frank smartness which doesn't force to protect his dignity will match him well. How do you feel? Although it is just my personal impression, Cecil is who was demanded to know the "darkness" which the world and human being have, and Cain is who can perceive (or feel) people's individual "darkness." Though if he can't become a paladin who saves the world, he's the best knight who protects a person. ...Did I praise him too much?

By the way, he seemed to be a setup who can use white magic in the initial stage of development. In the screen shot in the official book "Settei-shiryou-hen (The Volume on Setting Data)," Cain's battle command has "white magic". If he could actually use, he wouldn't be called "the only one without MP in the last party"....
