In the Story

It was Golbeza, the "clad in the dark", that the King of Baron invited as a commander of the "Red Wings" after Cecil Harvey banished.
The King wants to collect the crystals: "the crystal of water" which Cecil wrested from Mysidia by the royal order, "the crystal of fire" in Damcyan, "the crystal of wind" in Fabul, and "the crystal of the earth" in Troia. Although Golbeza seems to obey the king, the king is his puppet in fact, and the real King already had been assassinated by his subordinate. He is the master of the mighty magic power subjugating Scarmiglione(Milon) of earth, Cagnazzo(Kainazzo) of water, Barbariccia(Valvalis) of air, and Rubicante(Rubicant) of fire, moreover he can command the spell which amplifies the darkness of the heart which even he himself has never noticed.
However, he is also the one who has been spelled, and his past memories have been sealed. The spell was shaken once when he faced the holy light, though, the sealed memories go down again in an instant. When the spell was broken, his first thought was "Why did I have all that hatred?"

Personal Opinion

Only his age was told in the interview with a staff, so "30 years old" is an official data.

When he regained his consciousness, he goes to the battle against Zems and he's prepared for the death. Then he says "I'll settle all this myself(*)," instead of "I'll defeat Zems." If he and Zems strike each other, not only the ringleader but also "the clad in the dark" who injured the Blue Planet directly can be erased.
As you see the line "I know you can't forgive or forget what I've done," he considers himself as a sinner and, moreover, he thinks he can't expiate his sin even after they defeated Zeroms. He did not "prepare for" his own death and did "hope for" it?
(Is this thinking unique to the Japanese culture?)
However, it is the greatest difference from his younger brother, supposing he thought so really. The younger brother who stands up saying "For all those living on the earth... I will destroy you!" (original: "I must never lose!") has friends and the people that he should protect, and the elder brother has nobody...
I can say about the remark "you won't forgive me" too. Cecil promises to Rydia to protect her after he says so, and Golbeza leaves his home planet after he does.

I like the scene "Good bye, brother" best in FF IV, well, how d'you think abot his judgment "I cannot go back to the earth considering what I have done"?
I think that there are two views. One is "he escaped without expiation." And the other is "It's the punishment for him to be separated from both his only blood relation and the home planet."
Cecil didn't stop Golbeza from going. Probably it was because Cecil knew that both Golbeza and the people around him would be troubled if he returned on the ground. But if he "felt" he mustn't stop his elder brother, it could be relief for Golbeza. Cos it means they're connected each other somehow.
Even so, though the spell by Zems was broken with much trouble, his HP at just before the final battle is 2943. It's a word play in Japanese: pronounce "2, 9, 4, 3" for "ni, ku, shi, mi" and it becomes "nikushimi (hatred)."
Had he been caught by the hatred for Zems, or for himself? Though he regained his consciousness, or because he regained his consciousness?
"You, the man of Darkness, using it does not mean anything to me." (original: "Although if you who walked the dark road use the crystal, its shine does never return.") ...Painful.

By the way, the holy power and the fire are his weak points, as you know. I think that have a meaning.
First, considering the scene when he returns sane, the holy power may break the spell by Zems. And the fire... he is weak in heat cos he wears black!! - Sorry, it was nonsence joke. (^^;)
Well, I think the fire may be his childfood trauma. For example, his blood relation died in the flame, or someone set on fire to kill him, or...
